Supper Club : Debra Oswald

  • Centennial Vineyards Restaurant 252 Centennial Road Bowral, NSW, 2576 Australia (map)

Meet Betty: storyteller, feminist, eternally curious and phenomenally old. On the eve of her hundredth birthday party, Betty tells us her story.

Born into poverty in pre-war London and growing up fast during the Blitz, Betty grabs the chance at a bigger life by migrating to Australia. From waitressing at the famous Trocadero dance hall to life as a suburban housewife and joining protest movements that shaped who we are now, Betty becomes an ordinary extraordinary woman. She lives through a century of massive change and, in her nineties, is still passionately engaged with the world, still surprising us.

Debra Oswald is the bestselling author of The Family Doctor and the creator of Offspring. She is a playwright, screenwriter, novelist and two-time winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award. She continues to write for stage and screen, recently performing to sold-out audiences her one-woman show Is There Something Wrong With That Lady?
